APBP’s Professional Development Seminar is a biennial conference providing a collegial atmosphere where attendees collaborate to learn how to propel policy into practice. Our tenth PDS in Memphis will offer a menu of sessions, mobile tours, poster sessions and networking events that supply the tools to move active transportation in your community to the next level.
The Professional Development Seminar will run for two and half days. Session speakers are sure to deliver state-of-the-practice information and share insights, tools and tactics; case studies that highlight the newest reports, experiments and programs; and tours and mobile sessions will showcase the Memphis area’s strategies for building connections and fostering collaboration within a diverse community.
Beginning in 1999, APBP has chosen innovative mid-size cities that lead the field in thought, design, practice and implementation to host its biennial conference. APBP has produced the PDS in Madison, Tucson, Cambridge, Chicago, Davis, New York, Charlotte, Boulder, and St. Louis. Here’s what people tell us after attending a Professional Development Seminar:
- “It was well-run, the sessions were informative, and there were many great people there.”
- “The schedule was very intensive which was great. There were many options to choose from.”
- “The APBP PDS has been the best training that I have had in four years.”

About the Venue
The 2017 PDS will take place at The Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis. With a style and tradition befitting one of Memphis’ grandest hotels, The Peabody Memphis offers a magnificent bridge between the “Blues City’s” celebrated past and cosmopolitan present. The celebrated Duck March takes place twice daily at 11 am and 5 pm when the Peabody Ducks walk to and from the fountain in the lobby.
Several landmark projects have recently enhanced Memphis such as Big River Crossing, a bicycle/pedestrian bridge crossing the Mississippi River into Arkansas, the Hampline, a two-way protected cycle track connecting Overton Park to the Shelby Farms Greenline, and several additional miles of the Wolf River Greenway, a 22-mile shared-use path currently under construction – sections open today are receiving 180,000 annual users.
In 2012, Bicycling magazine named Memphis the “Most-Improved City for Cycling,” and in 2015, Memphis was officially designated a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. Furthermore, Memphis has been certified as a Playful City USA in 2015 for its outstanding quality of assets encouraging outdoor physical activity among its residents and visitors.
